LibreOffice | Replaces Microsoft Office

LibreOffice is a free and open source office suite that can replace expensive or subscription office programs for many users.  

The LibreWriter program can do just about any task as other popular word processors and the files can be saved to be compatible with most other programs as well.  Most Linux distros come with LibreOffice installed, but those that do not can generally be added quickly in the software manager or terminal.
